Down the Rough Cascade Part 2

Following his first visit to Hagley Park, eighteenth-century English poet James Thomson immortalised the animation of its centrepiece in the chapter ‘Spring’ of his epic ‘Seasons’ poem. Now, with the catalyst for the lines of his verse restored, the water splashing over the stone steps recalls the scene of his inspiration. “Down the rough cascade white dashing fall” is certainly an apt description of the visual element, but the aural nature of the water’s frothing descent is equally as wonderful. Amplified by the slopes of steep sided valley, a sound that has slept for two centuries has now been re-awakened, adding to the watery charms of the scene at the Palladian pool. A truly wonderful treat for the eyes and ears.
